The Truth about Home Water Purification

What's the truth about home water purification? Do you need it, or is the stuff you're hearing about the quality (or lack thereof) of our water systems just hot air? Read this article to find out.

Let's don't beat around the bush. You need to purify your home water. The only real question is what type of purification device you should purchase.

But first let's go over why you need to purify your water.

Do you really know what's in your tap water, other than just plain old "H2O"?

Several studies have been done over the past few years by organizations as prestigious as Ralph Nader's group that have determined that our municipal water systems are compromised.

One study of 29 U. S. cities showed that all of their water supplies contained traces of at least one pesticide, and many contained more than one. Ralph Nader's group did a study that found over 2,000 chemicals known to cause cancer in our drinking water.

The U. S. Council on Environmental Quality even states that these levels of carcinogens are partially responsible for the growth in the number of cancers we get. In the United States, one out of three women will get cancer during their lifetimes. For men, it's worse-it's one out of two!

The problem is our municipal water treatment facilities are horribly out of date. All they do to filter your water is let it settle through a sediment bed and then throw some chlorine in it.

Chlorine works, in that it actually does kill bacteria, but it's kept in the water even after it leaves the treatment facility. There are two problems with this. One: chlorine is a poison. Two: it can sometimes combine with organic material to form highly carcinogenic compounds.

Every time you fill up a glass of water from your tap, you're drinking that.

There's been a bottled water explosion over the past ten years, partially because of justified fears about our water supplies.

Unfortunately, bottled water is usually no better than tap water. As a matter of fact, there are fewer restrictions on bottled water than there are on tap water.

If you've been wondering about the necessity of home water purification, stop wondering about it. For your health and the health of your family, it's absolutely necessary.

The only question now is which type of filter to get.

There are many different filtering technologies out there. Some are better for home use then others.

Reverse osmosis is not my favorite for home use, for example. Reverse osmosis filters out the trace minerals that are so necessary to our good health as well as the stuff you don't want. Also, it leaves the water tasting flat.

The best water filtration systems for home use actually use a combination of technologies to get out the bad stuff and leave in the good stuff.
